Computers

We have 5 computers available for your use during normal library hours.  Our computers are frequently used to type resumes or school reports, for internet research, and by children playing games.  We have a library of computer games available for use.   Internet access is provided free of charge to the public.

Our computers are very popular.  Therefore, it's a good idea to contact the library and reserve a computer in advance.  We will honor your reserve as long as you are doing legitimate work or study-related searches.

All patrons are asked to complete a Computer and Internet Usage application the first time they wish to use one of our computers.  All juveniles must have their parents/guardians come into the Library in order to sign-up for computer usage.

All of the computers are currently networked to either a color laser printer or a color inkjet printer.

Please contact a librarian before you print to ensure the copy fee you will be responsible for.

Genealogy Library

Fairmount Public Library has a combined Indiana and Genealogy section.

This section houses a variety of reference works about our state and its notable Hoosiers.

Local works about Fairmount, its citizens and landmarks are also included in this reference area.

Several family histories have been donated to the Library.

A special collection of circulating and non-circulating materials on James Dean may be viewed by patrons by request.

A collection of FAMILY TREE CD-ROMs are available as is a PARK CEMETERY TRANSCRIPTIONS CD-ROM for use in the Library.

The Fairmount Public Library strives to provide all of our patrons with a wide variety of materials in various formats to enrich the individual's educational or recreational pursuits.

Circulation Materials

Books     We have a large collection of children, adult, reference and large-print books available for check-out.

Magazines       We also have a large collection of children, teen and adult magazines, titles ranging from "National Geographic Kids" to "Sport's Illustrated".

Audio Books     Our collection of audio books continues to grow.  Much of this developing section includes popular works of fiction; however, non-fiction titles are also beginning to appear.  Many of our borrowers find the audio books interesting listening on car journeys; but they are often borrowed by those who have trouble reading print.

Videos     We have an extensive children and family video collection.

DVDS     We began a collection in March, 2006.  Only adult library card holders (18 and up) may check out the DVDs.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)    If  the Library does not have a title in its collection, a book is borrowed from another library within the state or possibly from an out-of-state library.  In-state borrowings are free.  If the patron accepts an out-of-state borrow, there may be a fee involved.

September, 2008:  The Board of Trustees has approved the following guidelines for the Inter-Library Loan services Fairmount Public Library offers.

  • Patrons must provide an author name or title.  The more specific a patron can be, the better the chances the right material is ordered.
  • Materials to be ordered must be at least 6 months to 1 year old, before a library will loan it.
  • Patrons must ensure that the Library has the most up-to-date contact information on file: phone number and address.
  • If a phone number is unavailable, the Library will mail a postcard.
  • If a post card has to be sent, the patron will lose this time to enjoy the ordered material.
  • Materials may not be renewed.  Check-out period will be two weeks.
  • These services are offered free of charge unless the material is found out-of-state.
  • Copies of articles or microfilm materials will be assessed a borrowing fee.
  • Out-of-state material charges must be paid upon pick-up of the materials, usually a return postage cost.
  • Damage or lost materials will be subject to a fee.
  • Late materials will be subject to a fee.
  • Patrons who bring back loaned materials late will be warned the first time.  If materials are returned late a second time, the patron will be assessed a holding fee of $5.00 before any more materials will be ordered for them.
  • Patrons who return damaged or lost materials will have their privileges suspended indefinitely.
